Fr Mark departs to take up urgent appointment in Canterbury

Due to an urgent need in the Diocese, Fr Mark Wharton has accepted the appointment of Chaplain to the University of Kent in Canterbury, where he will also assist in the Parish. The Masses this past weekend (19/20 November) were Fr Mark’s last weekend in the Parish.

The previous Chaplain at the University of Kent, Fr Tom Herbst OFM, sadly died recently, and the Archbishop was concerned that this important ministry to the young people and the academic and support staff of the University should continue without interruption.

The Archbishop asks for your understanding, and appreciates how disappointing this news is for the Parish.

Fr Mark agreed to accept the appointment, which we know brings him sadness at leaving Bromley after such a short time, but the situation highlights the shortage of priests, and the need to pray for, and promote,
vocations to the priesthood and the religious life.

The Archbishop approached Fr Peter to ask him to positively consider this proposal to Fr Mark, because there will be two active retired priests coming to live in the Parish in the near future, who will be able to provide some priestly ministry.

We re grateful to all Fr Mark has done in his time at SS Joseph & Swithun and we wish him every blessing for the future.
